Action and Agent
Philosophical Society of Finland

Helsinki 2001, 95 pp.
Olli Koistinen investigates the nature of action and the ontology of the agent. He argues that correct understanding of actions requires a Chisholmian line of agent causation. One of the central claims of the monograph is that volitionalistic theories of action improve naturalistic theories only if acts of will are interpreted as agent-causings. Koistinen also argues that the problem of the weakness of the will cannot be solved in a naturalized theory of action. However, in the agent causationist model proposed here, the conceptual puzzlement around weakness can be explained away.
