The vegetation, geology and geological history of four study areas are described in this paper. Two kinds of information are given: in addition to listing and mapping the total material of many genera collected so far, some taxa as new records for Hunan Province are reported. For these taxa the primevity index is not counted, their frequency not given, and their distributions are not mapped. Their detailed taxonomic and phyteogeographical treatment will follow later.
