The research presented in this book focuses on address forms in personal correspondence from the 15th to the 18th century. The thesis looks at the use of address as a social and pragmatic phenomenon, taking an interdisciplinary approach which combines social and linguistic aspects with the variation and change of address in time. The focus is on the description of different forms of address as well as the pragmatic functions the use of address serves in personal relationship.
