Kettunen, Harri
Nasal Motifs in Maya Iconography. A Methodological Approach to the Study of Ancient Maya Art
Finnish Academy of Science and Letters
Annales Academiae Scientiarum Fennicae. Humaniora 342
Helsinki 2006, 780 pp.
The book covers all media of artistic expression employed by Maya artists that have survived until now. This allows Harri Kettunen to explore Maya iconography in a radically different and much more profound way and to raise Art Historical questions concerning the development of styles and the representational qualities of artistic media. The application of this method and of research presented in this book can be used not only to define regional styles, artistic innovations, and the evolution of new ideas and ideologies. It can also be used to date and locate works of art with no or little understood archaeological context. This new methodology will have to be taken into account by all future scholarship in the field.
