Medieval Library of Alexandria contains today approximately 530 manuscripts, 2700 early printed books and more than 20000 volumes of modern research literature. Furthermore, The Archives of the Patriarchate have been stored in the Library since the 16th century. The Finnish team started the project to save the medieval library in 2000. The project aims pro primo at rescuing and studying the manuscripts and rare editions of the Library. The task consists of codicological research, preservation and conservation and digital imaging of the written material on parchment and paper. The project aims pro secundo at the reconstruction of the bulk of manuscripts of the Medieval Library, including also the texts from pagan antiquity, and finally at writing the history of the Patriarchal Library.
