Politics in the Midst of Terror. Religious Beliefs and Political Action in the Peruvian Andes

Markus Österlund's study examines a timely subject – the interaction between deeply held religious convictions and political action. As an inquiry into the recent political struggles of Peru, it addresses how people in the highlands of Huanta created strategies for social and political action in the midst of a savage internal war between the Maoist guerrilla movement, Shining Path, and the Peruvian army. Through participatory observation and interviews, and, above all, by sharing the very life of the people and being entrusted with their friendships and life stories, the author discovers the intrinsic power that enabled the people to stand up and fight against Shining Path – and ultimately conquer. By internalizing the "production" of spiritual assets, i.e. drawing a distant God closer, communities developed a new repertoire of resources; spiritual assets became crucial in forming a political response to social circumstances.
