The Papal Curia, known as the "Well of Grace", was the most elaborate system of administration in the Middle Ages. Through the regulations of canon law it controlled the life of Christians in every corner of Christendom and the Penitentiary was one of its offices. This is a pilot study of the Penitentiary in the Late Middle Ages. It studies the role of the office through the Finnish and Swedish documents in the archives of the Penitentiary, which so far are still very little known.
