New, blue and borrowed — Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland is the first book on the history of Finnish universities of applied sciences. The book provides an overall picture of the factors that contributed to the creation of the universities of applied sciences in Finland and their development up to today.

The book introduces background information on the creation of universities of applied sciences to international readers, developers of higher education and researchers through the interviews of numerous politicians and officials who have participated in the development of this form of education.

The book was written by docent and President and CEO (Professor Emeritus) Tapio Varmola, Ph.D. (Educ.), Researcher Mervi Friman, PhD, M.A., Principal lecturer Ari Haasio and PhD, President and CEO Tapio Huttula. They have more than a hundred years of experience in the development of universities of applied sciences and the entire university system.
