The university's nationbuilding character and its contribution to the formation of the modern state and modern society is obvious and cannot be underestimated. Yet, this development has taken different shapes in the various countries of Europe. In the spring 1994 a conference was organized at the University of Helsinki, where University and the making of the nation was analyzed and comparisons were made between the countries in Northern Europe, Russia, the Baltic States, Hungary and Irland.
