Most of us have probably sometimes wondered what love is. Rather than answering this question, the research presented in this book concentrates on the meaning of the English verb and noun love during two periods of time, Early Modern (ca 1500–1700) and Present-Day English, and the relationships covered by this word, asking whether there are any changes in how often it is used about particular kinds of love. The thesis also asks how cognitive metaphors contribute to the conceptualisation of love in each period.
