This book deals with the political culture of Muscovite Russia from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The Muscovite autocracy was a complex political system which included not only the sovereign, but also his trusted counsellors, who regularly advised the ruler on various matters. This study examines the practise of consultation in a wider historical and cultural context and shows that the relations between the ruler and his counsellors were based on the concepts of Orthodox theology and Muscovite political practise.
