Language, Religion, and Art. Critical Essays on the Semantics of Religious Language in the Light of Philosophical Logic
Luther-Agricola-Seura
Schriften der Luther-Agricola-Gesellschaft 75
Helsinki 2025, 515 pp.
Philosophical debates concerning religion have traditionally approached their subject from the point of view of knowledge, being and morality. In the late 19th century discussions, the focus shifted towards the field of semantics: the aim has been to restrict the philosophy of religion to analysis utilizing semantics. Semantical analysis was used to identify the characteristics crucial to religious meaning. Likewise, the aim was to refine the theoretical level of the concepts used to define anything in the field of religion.

The essays offered here introduce tools for defining religious terms and their meanings. The first nine articles deal with identifying religious variables. The next five articles address questions about the formation of meaning in various contexts, ranging from the theory of relativity to the logic of certainty. The final three articles concern the meaning formation involved in cinema, fine art and music.
