This book aims to contribute new information to the knowledge of the different aspects of philhellenism by concentrating on northern Europe. The focus is particularly on Finland because the central character of the book, August Maximilian Myhrberg, was born there. The intention is to provide the reader with background information and create a basis for the examination of a specific case of philhellenism in the north, in Russia, Sweden and Finland, and to describe the cultural and political context in which the actions of Myrhberg took place and the climate in which the heroic narrative of his life history started to take shape.
